I saw the new Die Hard movie this week. It’s the latest in a series of films in which Hollywood is attempting to breathe new life into action actors from the past. Stallone resurfaced in a poor effort to bring back Rocky, and Harrison Ford has agreed to do one more Indy flick. In Die Hard, Bruce Willis returns to the screen 12 years after the last Die Hard film as John McClane, infantily suppressed, pea brained police detective whose role in life is to save America when no one else can. The story is lame, as is the dialogue. However, there is action and plenty of it. Willis’ character, still crazy after all these years, has the save-the-world formula down pat. My question: Has creativity in the film industry been sideswiped by the need to make the almighty dollar? Is bringing back the ‘old guys’ in patterned success formula movies in the best interest of the art of film making?

Hi Gerard. I think this is another case of less is more--people seem to want to pay a lot more for less these days. Less quality, that is. Acting? Dialogue? Storyline? Bah, just flash some big lights (explosions) and blast some loud noise (screeching cars) and the masses seem satisfied. I'm sure it has to do with the trend in this country of dummying down. Less and less seem to want to actually have to think anymore, just be occupied for a while.

Comfortably numb?

Possibly that sounds crass, just seen the trend growing. Connections in many ways to the art world myself. Work in an art gallery and custom framing shop for past twenty years. First time we saw a customer who'd bought a cheep pc printer mass produced piece of art at a show and was satisfied...the writing was on the wall. We frame more and more pieces with lines and bubble dots in them than studio portraits and watercolors--and people are happy. So many photo processing businesses got rid of all their old equipment and went digital, the subtleties of true film being lost--people do not mind. My husband uses ultra large wooden cameras; so many people these days do not even have experience with things of true quality. In the music industry it is cold, limited tone digital over the warmth to be had from tape recordings, same in film.

Yet in regards to your question, yes. People want the repeat of what they already know. It makes them ‘comfortable’ and conformed. Unified. ‘Updating’ songs instead of writing new material. True creativity is a no-no. Stay with a known formula that works. Again, I speak of the masses here--and that is where the dollars are to be made. In the retail business we call it ‘selling hamburgers’. Fast food. It is not art. In the main, the film industry is exactly that--an industry.

All I can say is thank gods for the internet! Seems the only place where you can find people who actually know how to play instruments, not voice over some dub track to which a company

(cut off) ...slaps a flashy label on. People who just love what they do, art, creating and expression for no other purpose beyond that. The independent films may not possess the bells and whistles, but heart can still be found there at least.
